I drove to Hanover, PA last winter and visited the Emeco factory to report this article in the current issue of US Airways magazine. Here are some photos from that trip:

The factory’s funny mirrored facade and lettering–does anyone know the name of that font?

Rows of Hudson chairs on the wall when you first walk into the factory.

In the break room, boxes of Hanover’s other famous products: Snyders pretzels and Utz potato chips. (The Germans who settled in this area were/are very industrious.)

The “Starck Museum,” a room in the factory that displays prototypes from past projects.

Some old clunky Emeco designs …

On the right is the 1951 Emeco chair found on eBay that inspired the “1951 chair,” left, designed by Adrian van Hooydonk and BMW DesignworksUSA and unveiled at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2005.

The base of a Kong stool, signed by Phillippe Starck. It says, in all caps, “Congratulations. Beautiful work like always. ‘Official piece of art.’ Thank you. Starck.”

An Emeco worker slipping a Hudson chair into a very hot bath.

Emeco worker in an Eyore sweatshirt working on seats for a batch of 1951 chairs.

Polishing a Hudson chair.

A row of just-polished chairs, ready for the next step in the process. Just like Starck says, beautiful work like always!
great shots! very cool…
